History of HCL Notes

In the early 1970s, David Woolley and his team at the University of Illinois' CERL (Computer Education Research Laboratory) used a message board application that replicated classic sticky notes. They called the system „Notes“.

In 1984, three CERL graduates, Ray Ozzie, Len Kawell and Tim Halvorsen, founded the „Iris Associates“ in Boston. The company was small and managed relationships with the two-year-older company „Lotus“, headed by Jim Manzi, where Ozzie was an outside contributor instrumental in the development of „Lotus Symphonie”. A year later, a Windows-capable version of "Lotus Notes" already existed. "Lotus Notes" was said to be one of the first Windows applications to run on "Windows" launched by Microsoft at the end of 1985. Until 1991, "Lotus Notes" was only used in the context of projects and was not officially available. In 1988 "Iris" was bought by "Lotus".

In 1996 "Lotus" was taken over by IBM; the purchase price of four billion dollars was the largest sum paid for a software company up to that point.

The main reason for the high price was probably "Lotus Notes", which has now become the main product. By 2001, Iris Associates was fully integrated into the IBM organization.

In March 2013, version 9 of the product was renamed to IBM Notes.

In 2017 the development was outsourced to HCL Technologies. In July 2019, Notes was fully acquired by HCL and renamed HCL Notes.
